Plumbing training apprentices mend water pipe
By mmorgan
Plumbing training apprentices may well have been among those involved in fixing a burst water pipe in Blackpool.
Employees from United Utilities – which has a turnover of 2 billion and claims to be the UK’s market leader in utility outsourcing – are mending the six-inch pipe on Common Edge Road after months of delays.
This news comes after the north-west water company replaced the majority of the pipes on the road earlier this year.
The work was carried out as part the Warrington-based utility firm’s 2.9 billion investment pledge to rid the city of leaky old pipes.
Engineers will now use a pipe-insertion technique to gain entry to the 100-year-old Victorian cast iron main, which has caused problems with residents’ water supplies over the past three years.
Local inhabitants should benefit from a secure and reliable fresh water supply for the next century once the work is completed.

Fitting Taps an Easy Plumbing Job
By Jo Harris
Though fitting taps seems to be an easy plumbing job, you should be well aware of the simple basics regarding this task. Like everywhere, you need to follow a step by step methodology to replace or install new taps.
Whether the tap fitting job is a part of your bathroom refurbishment, or you want to replace the tap just for the cosmetic reasons, you must be aware of one basic rule – hot water tap should be fitted on the left hand side while the cold water tap is to be installed on the right hand side.
Choice of Taps
There is a wide variety of taps in respect of different styles and looks available in the market. Firstly, go to a good hardware shop and pick the tap suitable to your bathroom or kitchen suite. Choose the colour that goes well with the rest of the basins surroundings. Though many manufacturers do not disclose this fact, yet you should know that chrome plated taps are far more resistant to the chemicals that are usually used in the bathrooms.
Taps Required
If you have a single hole in the basin, you will need a mono-bloc mixer tap. This tap has two small diameter pipes, one for hot water and the other for cold, coming out from a single hole. On the other hand, if you have two holes, then you may go for two holes mixture, that is, two taps with one spout. You can also opt for the taps having lever to control the opening and closing of the tap.
Beginning the Job
Before starting the installation or replacement process, make sure to cut off the water supply. If replacing the old ones, turn the taps on to take out any water stored in them.
Then, with the help of a basin wrench or a tap tool, undo the nuts placed between the tap and the supply pipe. Be ready for a short shower as some water will definitely come out in the process.
After that, loose the nuts holding the tap on the basin or the bath tub. Once the tap is being successfully removed, check and clean any old sealing compound.
You can now fix your new tap via any of the fix-a-tap washer kit or using similar anti-rotational washers. Simply place the tap through the hole, after pushing it through the washer and tighten up the nuts.
